Lake Como on a Slow Weekend

Lake Como on a Slow Weekend

Lake Como is not a place to conquer; it's a place to sink into. People arrive with itineraries and leave having spent three hours over lunch watching ferries drift between the villages. That, I promise you, is the correct way to do it. If you have a weekend, base yourself in Varenna — quieter and more romantic than its famous neighbours — and let the lake set the pace.

Begin each morning the way the locals do: an espresso and a pastry standing at the bar, then a slow walk along the waterfront before the day heats up. Varenna's lakeside promenade, strung between pastel houses and lapping water, is the kind of place where you'll take the same photo you've seen a hundred times and understand, at last, why everyone takes it.

The ferry is your best friend here. A single pass lets you hop between the great villages — the botanical gardens of one, the grand villas of another, the buzz of Bellagio across the water. Don't try to see them all. Pick two, wander their gardens and lanes, and build in an unplanned gelato stop. Travelling by boat instead of car means the journey is half the pleasure.

Lunch should be long and unrushed, ideally at a table close enough to the water to feel the breeze. Order the lake fish, a crisp local white, and whatever the waiter recommends without a menu. Then — and this is important — do nothing for a while. Read on the terrace, swim off the dock, nap through the warm part of the afternoon. A boathouse villa on the shore makes this effortless; the water is quite literally at your doorstep.

Evenings on Como are made for aperitivo. Find a terrace as the light goes gold on the mountains, order a spritz, and watch the last ferries cross. Dinner can be simple — a plate of pasta, a candle, the sound of water — because the setting is doing all the work. This is a lake that makes ordinary moments feel cinematic.

Give yourself permission to under-plan. The magic of Como is in the unscheduled hours, the ferry you catch on a whim, the village you didn't mean to visit. Stay with me on the shore in Varenna and I'll point you to the swimming spots, the ferry timings and the quiet trattoria the day-trippers never find.
